Epstein's outlook is both historically accurate and wrong. Today we are better than that. Epstein's outlook is both historically accurate and wrong. Today we are better than that.

My comment on a MeWe post discussing the Epstein case and how his actions were the norm throughout history.
I agree that Christianity is a civilizing influence in Western nations. By civilizing I mean lessening the coarseness of life for most, by fighting against mankind's baser instincts. That is why it is being fought by the illiberal left who want to replace Christian values with Secular Humanism, which allows or NAMBLA and the likes of Epstein and the Clintons.
But Capitalism also played a role by creating more wealth at all levels so that children would NOT have to be sold to feed the rest of the family.

Another Victor Davis Hanson column.
Another Victor Davis Hanson column, this time back to more current events - things that may effect the 2020 Presidential election.
My BLUF - The choice is between Capitalism limited by a GOVERNMENT LIMITED BY OUR CONSTITUTION TO BE A FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF THE STTES; or a SOCIALIST/COMMUNIST PURE DEMOCRACY (like Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, or China. We need to make the right choice. The wrong side tries to divert your attention with unimportant issues (TRUMP's personal style, his (real and imagined) sex life, his Racist and Sexist traits (both false), and how HE is wrecking the economy (a complete lie.)
The economy is booming; unemployment is down; and we can better afford a trade war than China. Don't let the other side intentionally tank the economy to improve their chances to defeat a successful president

What beats incumbent presidents? A recession is often the strongest tool of the opposition party. Democrats will be unlikely to beat Trump in 2020 without one.

My bottom line - the choice for 2020, President, Senate, and House of Representatives, is between Capitalism policed by a LIMITED, CONSTITUTIONALLY CONSTRAINED

Thoughts on China and the South China Sea.
Interesting juxtaposition of two trains of  thought on the level of threat created by China's construction and fortification of artificial islands in the South China Sea.
ADM (Ret.) Jim STAVRIDIS calls it a large threat in a speech he gave earlier this year. The link to the 1 hour talk, about an hour, talk is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzKXyIGjY6w

The speech is about an hour and worth watching in its entirety. Sorry but I don't have the time where he talks about the South China Sea.
A counterpoint comes from blogger Stephen Green. He discusses the problems with fixed fortifications. His post is here:

BLATE: Bottom line at the end - it becomes an important waterway if we surrender the right of free navigation in international waters. That is why we need the most powerful Navy in the world.

JUST SAY HELL NO. Thinking clearly about the left's promises.
Found an excellent column by Tucker Carlson on the dangers coming from the radical left wing that is ready o throw out the constitutional protections that keep us safe from a fringe saying pleasant sounding, but foolhardy and impossible, promises. He says to JUST SAY NO, and HELL NO; so he is echoing my words.

Origins WW II

Another Victor Davis Hanson column.
This time showing why he is a preeminent historian. Not directly relating to today's problems, except never forget the law of unintended consequences.

PJMEDIA.COM
Eighty years ago today, the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany made the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, an agreement that Hitler and Stalin would not destroy each other. It broke down, getting America into World War II.

New topic: "Mass school shootings" and students fear of being caught up in one.

This is a problem created out of whole cloth by the news media and liberal politicians as part of he campaign to disarm law-abiding Americans. Proposed solutions won't help, and arming responsible citizens (school employees and parents) which would help is prevented.
In Israel there is a rule that members of the military must be armed, even when off duty. The best solution for a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. You never hear in the news reports when the armed passer-by stops the deranged mass killer before he gets started.
And OBTW there are 37,000 high schools in the USA and less than 20 "mass shootings" in the last 10 years. ("Mass" where more than 1 person was hit by a bullet in or just outside a school.)
20 is too many to put up with, but we need to have a workable response (armed citizenry) and solve the real underlying problem (kids growing up in fatherless families and releasing the mentally ill onto our streets). Less than 2 in a group of 37,000 per year is pretty low. And some of the "mass shootings" took place in middle schools, raising the denominator of the ratio.
PROTECT THE SECOND AMENDMENT from the Socialist/Communist/Democrats. JUST SAY NO to gun grabbers.

Another great Victor Davis Hanson column.

Thanks to Stephanie Souders for pointing it out. Some snippets but read the whole column.

  • Because of the unique success of post-Civil War America in avoiding a Bosnia, Rwanda, or Syria, and given the nation’s lofty pretensions from its very founding, Americans often demand perfection as a requisite for being good—without much cognizance of what still passes for normal in Africa, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Not being a race- or class-obsessed Saudi Arabia, India, or Mexico may be a low bar, but some economically developed countries, such as South Korea and Japan, remain mired in racialist orthodoxies.
  • That few progressives in 2020 are currently running on platforms with concrete ideas about how to stop the urban slaughter—the great American tragedy of our age—should tell us that racially-driven outrage is largely politicized.
  • The one reason there are so many fake Jussie Smolletts or Covington psychodramas or Duke Lacrosse constructs or notions like microaggressions—or careers such as those of the clownish Al Sharpton (the anti-Semite, past purveyor of hatred, and tax-dodging racist)—is that ubiquitous white supremacy has largely become a thing of the past.

I, and all right thinking Americans, welcome all immigrants who  want to come here to embrace a culture of independence and self-sufficiency with Government protecting their, and our, ability to pursue those dreams. If they want to come here to go on the dole and get paid for coming - JUST STAY OUT.

Immigration without assimilation (to the real ideals
of the American dream) is Invasion.
